ASYMMETRICAL JACKET

Want to learn how to upcycle a dress and a long sleeve t-shirt into a jacket? Watch this inspirational video to learn how!

SUPPLIES:

You will need some basic sewing skills and the following supplies:

-A sewing machine with a ballpoint needle or a serger

-A *jersey-knit dress (this is where the bodice of the jacket is coming from) *Jersey knit=stretchy/t-shirt material

-A long sleeve t-shirt (this is where the sleeves for the jacket are coming from. The sleeves don’t have to be the same color as the bodice, that part is up to you:)

-A favorite t shirt that fits you well, meaning:

—-the shoulder seams are in a good place (the tee is neither too tight, nor too baggy)

—the back of the t-shirt falls at a length that you like

(The favorite tee WILL NOT BE CUT. You are using it as a guide!)

INSTRUCTIONS:

1. Cut the sleeves off of the long sleeve t-shirt

2. Cut the long jersey-knit dress at the waistline (you should be left with a large circular, fabric "hoop")

3. Cut the circular hoop in half at side seam to form one long fabric rectangle

4. Turn the rectangle of fabric so that the hem is at the top and the unfinished edge is at the bottom

5. Determine the jacket front length by draping the rectangle over your shoulders

6. Cut jacket to desired length in front (if needed)

7. Mark center line with a pin (find it by folding the rectangle in half)

8. Mark lapel line with a pin

9. Line up favorite t-shirt onto center line and lapel line

10. Pin t-shirt into place (especially at armhole seams) DON’T PIN THE SLEEVES DOWN!

11. Trim excess off of rectangle to match the length of your favorite t-shirt

12. Fold in the sleeves of your favorite tee at pins and cut conservative armhole slits into rectangle, following the curve of the favorite tee seam

13. Pin sleeves into armholes (line up lapel line with top of sleeve) with right sides to right sides

14. Sew with 5/8” seam allowance

15. Trim any threads and turn right-side out

Voilà! C'est fini!
